GPS Managing Professional Risks: Legal Updates for Dental Practitioners [Webinar]

Treatment that exceeds the standard of care may sometimes result in claims of malpractice or discipline by the state dental board. Compliance with new, and existing, regulations and guidelines can often help dentists avoid these unpleasant situations. This on-demand webinar discusses the use of comprehensive systems of documentation that may help protect the dentist. Additional topics include triggers for lawsuits and licensure problems, basic risk management principles, and privacy issues relating to the use of social media. Dr. Richard Harold also shares his list of the top 10 steps dentist can take right now to reduce their potential legal jeopardy.

This program is the eighth in a series of webinars based on content from the ADA’s Guidelines for Practice Success™ (GPS™) modules and recaps some of the information available in the GPS module on Managing Professional Risks. That resource was a collaboration between external content authorities and the ADA's Council on Dental Practice, Council on Members Insurance and Retirement Programs, and the Council on Advocacy for Access and Prevention.


Dr. Pamela Porembski, DDS

Dr. Porembski is the director of the ADA's Center for Dental Practice in the Practice Institute. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Dentistry and practiced general dentistry in private practice in Chicago, taught in a dental hygiene program, and was a consultant with a dental benefits company before joining the staff of the American Dental Association.

Ms. Rita Tiernan
Ms. Tiernan is the senior manager of the ADA's Council on Members Insurance and Retirement Programs (CMIRP). CMIRP is the agency of the American Dental Association whose purpose is to enhance the value of membership by overseeing the ADA member’s insurance and retirement programs and by aiding dentists in the management of their personal and professional risks through development of educational programs and resources.

Richard S. Harold, DMD, JD

Dr. Harold is an Associate Professor and Practice Coordinator, Department of Comprehensive Care at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He received his DMD from Tufts University, his JD from New England School of Law, and his BS in pharmacy from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. Before joining the Tufts faculty, Dr. Harold owned and operated a general dentistry practice near Boston and developed and participated in several dental public health programs.
He is a member of the ADA, the American Dental Education Association, the Massachusetts Dental Society, the American College of Legal Medicine, and the American Academy of Dental Science. He has lectured across the country on dental-legal issues authored articles on the subjects of dentistry's role in the opioid epidemic, management of acute dental pain, and ethical and legal guidelines for prescription writing.
