Repurposing the existing leasehold from an outdated orthodontic office layout to a modern high-end cosmetic and restorative dental practice with ample room for expansion and growth were critical keys for practice design success.

Brett McRay and Heather Robbins received the 2015 Wells Fargo Dental Office Design of the Year award in the Small Practice category. Describe your practice philosophy and how it influenced your design?

The Dentists at Houston Westchase, was established with a relentless approach to educate and improve oral health through comprehensive, contemporary, cosmetic and restorative dentistry.  Repurposing the existing leasehold from an outdated orthodontic office layout to a modern high-end cosmetic and restorative dental practice with ample room for expansion and growth were critical keys for practice design success.

Explain how you and your team approached the design of your office?

Functional considerations with an unusually shaped leasehold space dictated attention to features such as a formal semi-private check-out area, centrally located sterilization, and dedicated consultation room. These attributes were all paramount to improving traffic flow for both staff and patients while maintaining and preserving privacy of patient care.

What advice do you have for designing a dental facility?

Look, listen, and learn! Look and examine multiple office concepts to define a realistic feel for your taste in design influences as they relate to your business objectives. Realize that your own needs may dictate different elements in design as they relate to your unique patient demographics and procedures. Listen to feedback from colleagues and professionals regarding strategies and techniques to achieve a balance among design, function, technology, and adaptability to your clinical tasks. Learn to plan effectively within the confines of a pre-determined budget to accomplish your goals.  Plan for flexibility in costs and contingencies along the course of construction and build-out.
