Dr. Derf Simes and partners received the Dental Office Design of Year award in the Group Practice category at ADA 2015. Each year, the Wells Fargo Dental Office Design of the Year Competition rewards dentists for creating a dental office that supports their practice philosophy. The Racine Dental Group in Racine, Wisconsin, built their practice philosophy on a foundation of patient communication and education with full dental services all under one roof.

Describe your practice philosophy and how it influenced your design?

We wanted to continue to be relevant and current in our patient appeal and experience. Our existing building didn’t reflect the care we provided and was becoming an impediment to doctors, staff, patients, and our ultimate goal of staying relevant. We established key objectives to standardize the operatories, integrate technology, improve the patient experience, and increase patient/staff privacy via HIPAA compliance and patient comfort.

Explain how you and your team approached the design of your office?

We had three primary functional challenges unique to our practice:

  • Standardizing operatories for multiple practicioners and specialists
  • Creating a small scaled “patient experience” in a large scaled (67 operatories) facility
  • Achieving efficient access to operatories for patients and to clinical and administration support for staff in a large scaled facility

Top design features include a central elevator, full in-house production lab, a separation of clinical and administration areas, and a separation between reappointing and waiting areas.

What advice do you have for designing a facility?

Hire professionals. We researched, interviewed, and selected The Practice Design Group. They were unbiased in their counsel and expert in dental design specifics that solved our large-scaled practice issues. Their involvement throughout the process design, pricing, and construction - kept cost overruns in check and the design intact. Our vision was translated into an office that quite frankly has exceeded our very best hopes.
