Drs. Elizabeth N. Katzberg and Robert W. Glenn accepted a 2015 Dental Office Design of the Year award for Genesis Orthodonics at ADA 2015. The Wells Fargo Dental Office Design of the Year in the Outstanding Specialty Practice goes to the best new or expanded facility. Genesis Orthodontics is an orthodontic team of professionals with a desire to partner with patients to provide uncompromisingly excellent orthodontic treatment, as well as a friendly office atmosphere and genuine personal care to meet individual needs. When Dr. Katzberg joined her father in practice, they needed to expand their space to accommodate two doctors, one left-handed and one right-handed, as well as transition to a paperless system and eliminate paper patient charts.

Describe your practice philosophy and how it influenced your design?

Our priorities are to treat patients the way we would want to be treated and to foster an environment of open communication. The comfortable and open office design creates opportunities for connecting with our patients and their families from the reception room to the treatment rooms. The office flows efficiently and has a relaxed and fun, yet professional, feel. The office design includes six treatment rooms, one of which primarily functions for new patient exams and consultation with our treatment coordinator. The consultation room is large and comfortable and also provides privacy for financial and treatment planning considerations. While the office for our financial coordinator flows efficiently with the scheduling desk and our scheduling coordinators, it is also designed to enable complete privacy for financial matters.

Explain how you and your team approached the design of your office?

Orthodontics is by nature an aesthetic discipline and in our office design we have achieved a clean, contemporary, and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. We use the most current radiographic technology, orthodontic appliances, and practice management software in our patient care. We encourage parents and family to sit with patients to be part of their treatment so half of our reception room chairs are located in treatment rooms. Most importantly, we love people - we want them to feel comfortable, cared for, and welcome from the very first time they hear about Genesis Orthodontics.

What advice do you have for designing a facility?

Hire a dental architect! This was the best money we spent. Their expertise is invaluable – from creating efficiency and flow in the office design and enhancing communication with building contractors to specs such as outlet placement and design of square shaped trash deposit holes instead of round holes (efficiency in cleaning plaster from a spatula, for example). This is your business, so determine early on what you want to ethically and morally portray, and let your design follow that passion.
